Consider Libertarian Alternative in Illinois

As a Libertarian, I'm appalled at the inability of the Republican and Democratic parties to address the important issues facing our state. Although the Legislature is a month into overtime, it still hasn't produced a budget for the current year.

We don't have a sensible plan for maintaining our infrastructure. Service providers aren't paid on time. Our pension systems are a mess. And our public school system continues to produce poor results in spite of increased spending.

The worst problem is that government and union bureaucracies which support the system reject all attempts at innovative reform.

Libertarians believe that reducing government will allow citizens to devise creative solutions to our problems and free up resources to fund better ways of doing things. Organizations in the private sector tend to work more efficiently, in part because they're generally smaller and less bureaucratic.

If you share our desire to improve the state, please join us at 7 p.m. Thursday July 12 in the auditorium of the Urbana Free Library for a free talk on "Grappling with the Octopus in the Statehouse: A Primer on How to Get Things Done in Illinois Politics."

The speaker will be Jim Nowlan, a former member of the Illinois House, state agency director on three occasions and a top aide to three Illinois governors. He will talk about how the game is played and how groups such as ours can influence it for the better.
